Home Safe and Sound: Finding Lasting Security in the Arms of God

Home Safe and Sound:
Finding Refuge in the Arms of Our Heavenly Father

"Your brother has come home... and your father has him back safe and sound." — Luke 15:27

The Deep Longing to Feel Safe

Every human heart longs for safety. Beneath our desire for success, healthy relationships, financial security, and stability lies a deeper need: the desire to feel & be protected, secure, loved, nurtured, guided and at peace.

Many women carry wounds from childhood, relational trauma, abandonment, betrayal, abuse, neglect, or disappointment. These experiences can leave us feeling vulnerable, anxious, hypervigilant, and constantly searching for a place where we can finally exhale. Safety is something that hasn’t been experienced yet, fully.

I spent years looking for safety in people, accomplishments, control, approval, and circumstances. Yet none of these fully satisfied the deep cry of my soul for safety!

Why? - I have been contemplating this a lot!

Because God created us all to find our ultimate refuge in Him.

We were formed from dust—finite, dependent, and designed to live in relationship with our Creator. The safest place a human being can ever dwell is in the presence of the living God.

God Is Our Safe Refuge

Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself as a Protector, Defender, Shepherd, Fortress, and Refuge.

When life feels uncertain, God reminds us: "The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms." (Deuteronomy 33:27)

What a beautiful picture this is! I know it might seem to good to be true, but when you are soaking in His presence and no longer hindered by the darkness and heaviness of the world, of sin, and of satan, you will be able to experience this soaking. In God’s faithful arms, on earth as it is in heaven.

Can you imagine being held by His everlasting arms—arms that never grow weary, never fail, never abandon, and never let you go?

When Fear Tries to Take Over

Fear often whispers:

"What if something goes wrong?" / "What if I fail?" / "What if I get hurt again?" / "What if God doesn't come through?"

But when we walk in Faith in Jesus Christ, we can have a different experience that is not based on fear! Maybe this scripture will help you:

"When I am afraid, I put my trust in You." (Psalm 56:3)

Notice David did not say, "I never feel afraid."

He said, "When I am afraid."

Fear may come, but fear does not have to rule.

So when you feel afraid of something, you can choose to trust in what God’s word says. He says that He did not give us a spirit of fear - but instead He gave us power, love and a sound mind. Our trust in God can truly grow when we remember who God is.

He is the One who:

  • Goes before you.

  • Walks beside you.

  • Strengthens you.

  • Protects you.

  • Delivers you.

  • Never leaves you.

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you." (Isaiah 41:10)

Fear loses its power when we become more aware of God's presence than our circumstances.

The Refuge Trauma Survivors Need Most

Many women who have experienced relational trauma develop survival strategies. They become hyper-independent. They try to control everything. They stay guarded. They anticipate danger. They struggle to trust.

These responses often develop because safety was absent when it was most needed. Yet healing begins when we discover that God is not unsafe. He is not unpredictable. He is not abusive. He is not neglectful. He is not distant. He is a perfect Father.

"A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in His holy dwelling." (Psalm 68:5)

As we learn to bring our fears, grief, disappointment, and pain into His presence, we begin experiencing a new kind of security—one that is not dependent on circumstances — but rooted in an honest and real intimate relationship with Him.

The Lord becomes our secure attachment. The One we can run to. The One who listens. The One who comforts. The One who remains.

Resting Under His Wings

"He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge." (Psalm 91:4)

Like a mother bird protecting her young, God invites us to come close. We can actually relinquish striving, performing, proving, and instead actually rest! What a concept, rest and be healed. Rest and be loved. Rest and be protected.

Many strive, but God wants us to rest in Him. To feel safe. Refuge is found through our surrender and in trust in Him. The safest place on earth is not a physical location or a person. It is abiding in the presence of Jesus. It is slowing down, being still, and knowing that He is our loving God. If you don’t yet know Jesus, you can give your life to Him and begin your faith walk with Him today.

Jesus: Our Safe Place Forever

The greatest expression of God's protection was not keeping us from every hardship. It was sending His Son to rescue us from sin, death, and separation from Him. Jesus came so we could come home. He came so we would never walk alone. He came so we could belong to the Father forever.

Jesus said:

"My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand." (John 10:27-28)

So sister, know that there is real security with Jesus, and no one can snatch you from His hand.

Fear will loose its grip. Failure won’t matter. Rejection wounds can and will be healed. No spiritual attack on you can prosper. Your past will be healed and let go of, only now as a way to testify for others. The future God has for you is good. It will be hard at times, but He will go before you and walk by your side through it all.

Nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus.

Home Safe and Sound

Perhaps today you feel weary today, you are not alone in this. I have walked through very weary seasons, and yet God has shown me his faithful presence in everything I walk through. He walks me through it and out of it, in His way, His timing, His destiny for me. He can and will do this for you, too, if you let Him!

Perhaps you've been carrying burdens that were never yours to carry. Perhaps fear has been louder than faith. Perhaps you've been longing for rest. I want to encourage you to hear the invitation of our Heavenly Father:

Come home, my precious one. Come into My presence. Come under My protection. Come rest in My love. You do not have to hold everything together. You do not have to carry every burden. You do not have to face life alone. The Lord is your refuge. Your fortress. Your hiding place. Your Shepherd. Your Defender. Your safe place.

And one day, when your journey on earth is complete, you will arrive fully and finally in His presence—home forever, safe and sound.

Reflection Questions for your journey

  1. Where have I been seeking safety apart from God?

  2. What fears am I carrying today that I need to surrender to the Lord?

  3. What would it look like to trust God's protection more deeply?

  4. Which Scripture about God's refuge speaks most powerfully to my heart right now?

  5. How is Jesus inviting me to rest in Him today? You can ask Him right now!

Prayer is powerful!

Prayer

Father,

Thank You for being my refuge, my fortress, and my safe place. Thank You that I never have to face life's challenges alone because You are always with me. When fear rises, help me remember that You are greater than every circumstance.

Heal the places in my heart that learned to live in self-protection, striving, anxiety, or fear. Teach me to trust Your goodness and rest beneath the shadow of Your wings. Thank You for holding me in Your everlasting arms and for never leaving nor forsaking me.

Jesus, thank You for making a way for me to come home to the Father. Thank You that nothing can separate me from Your love. Fill me with Your peace, strengthen my faith, and help me walk confidently in the security of Your presence.

Today I choose to place my trust in You.

In Jesus' mighty name,

Amen.
