Pause, Pray, Listen: Relearning How to Hear God After Relational Trauma

Rising Anew in Christ:
Learning to Walk in God’s Wisdom
After Relational Dysfunction

Healing after relational dysfunction is not only about recovering from what was—it is about learning how to walk forward in God’s truth, strength, and clarity with the Lord.

Many women coming out of unhealthy relationships have been conditioned to people-please, second-guess themselves, or look to others for direction and security. But in Christ, you are being restored to a place of security, wisdom, and confident decision-making led by the Holy Spirit.

As Scripture reminds us, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). This freedom includes how you make decisions, how you hear God, and how you move forward in your life.

One powerful, Christ-centered way to begin rebuilding this area is through a simple but deeply transformative pattern:

PAUSE → PRAY → LEAN → LISTEN

This pattern creates space for God to lead, rather than reacting out of fear, pressure, or old relational patterns.

  • PAUSE: Step away from urgency and emotional pressure.
“Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).

  • PRAY: Invite the Lord directly into your decision.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer…present your requests to God” (Philippians 4:6).

  • LEAN: Surrender your understanding and expectations.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5).

  • LISTEN: Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you through peace, Scripture, and discernment.
“My sheep hear My voice… and they follow Me” (John 10:27).

This is not about rushing to an answer—it is about cultivating relationship and trust with God as your true source of direction.

A Four-Step, Scripture-Grounded Decision Process

As you grow in healing, the Lord will also teach you how to make decisions with clarity and confidence. A practical way to do this is through a four-step process rooted in biblical wisdom:

1. Identify the Decision

Write down the specific choice before you and the options available.

God is not a God of confusion.
“For God is not the author of confusion but of peace” (1 Corinthians 14:33).

Clarity begins with acknowledging what is actually in front of you.

2. Gather Information

Take time to understand the details. This is where wisdom and stewardship begin.

“The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance” (Proverbs 21:5).

Gathering information is not striving—it is partnering with God in wisdom.

3. Assess Through God’s Presence

This is where you apply PAUSE → PRAY → LEAN → LISTEN.

Invite the Lord into every part of the process. Ask Him to reveal what you may not see on your own.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally…” (James 1:5).

In this stage, you are not relying on fear, pressure, or people’s opinions—you are learning to be led by God.

4. Act on the Direction Given

Once you have sought the Lord and aligned your decision with Scripture, move forward in faith.

“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act” (Psalm 37:5).

Sometimes, you may still be waiting for confirmation—and that is okay. Waiting on the Lord is not delay; it is preparation.

“Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength” (Isaiah 40:31).

Breaking Free from People-Pleasing

One of the greatest shifts in healing is moving from people-pleasing into God-led living.

You are no longer called to be driven by others’ expectations—you are called to be led by the Spirit of God.

“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God?” (Galatians 1:10)

As you follow this process, you will begin to notice something powerful:

  • Your anxiety decreases

  • Your confidence increases

  • Your decisions feel anchored in peace

This is because you are no longer double-minded.

“A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways” (James 1:8)

Instead, you are becoming steady, rooted, and secure in Christ.

Anchoring Your Decisions in the Word

An essential part of this journey is allowing Scripture to confirm your direction.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16)

When you sense the Lord leading you:

  • Bring it back to the Word

  • Ask for confirmation

  • Hold onto the scripture He highlights

Even if the path feels unfamiliar, His Word will steady you.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105)

You Are Learning to Walk with God

This process is not about perfection—it is about relationship.

You are learning to:

  • Hear His voice

  • Trust His leading

  • Walk in obedience

  • Stand in peace

And even now, if you are in a place of waiting for confirmation—know that this is a holy place. God is building depth, trust, and discernment within you.

“The Lord will guide you continually” (Isaiah 58:11)

Final Encouragement

You are not the same woman you once were.
You are no longer bound by confusion, fear, or the need for external validation.

In Christ, you are becoming:

  • Clear

  • Grounded

  • Led by truth

  • Anchored in His voice

As you continue to invite God into your decisions, you will walk more boldly into the purpose and path He has for you.

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10)

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for leading Your daughters into truth, healing, and freedom. Thank You that You are not a God of confusion, but of peace and clarity.

Lord, teach us to pause, to pray, to lean on You, and to listen for Your voice above all others. Break every pattern of fear, pressure, and people-pleasing, and restore us into confident, Spirit-led women.

Give us wisdom as You promise in Your Word. Confirm our steps through Scripture, and anchor us in Your truth when the path feels uncertain.

We trust You, Lord, with every decision, every step, and every unknown. Lead us fully into the purpose and path You have prepared for us.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
